Dear Colleagues,
Our university gallery is gearing up to produce virtual exhibitions and the IT Department has offered us a test instance of Omeka as a structure for aranging and presenting the exhibition content. Presently, we are exploring its features, customizations abilities, etc. to determine if it can be of use to our institution’s purposes. While we are not bound to use this software, we are open to considering it. In taking it for a test drive, we had some concerns about customization options within the various templates.
Our goal is to have the capacity to customize templates per exhibition (i.e. designing an aesthetically-appropriate and original template for each exhibition based on its theme). Instead, we’re feeling very restricted and constrained by only being able to edit certain basic elements of themes (i.e. background color, text color, etc.) and lacking the ability to customize at a deeper level.
Specifically, we’d like customization where:
- An exhibit can contain introductory text and thumbnails on the same page
- Remove the citation field
- Add customized backgrounds
- Resize thumbnails to our needs per exhibit
- Insert specific banners per exhibit
Can anyone using Omeka chime in on if these customizations are possible, or perhaps send URLs to your Omeka exhibits so we can see what’s possible? Or, if you have had experiences with Omeka, good or bad, or have opted to use another software package that works better for you and is more cost effective, I would very much like to hear about your experiences.
You can contact on-list or directly via email below. Thank you in advance for any insights/solutions you may offer.
