  • 1.  Electronic Interactives in Galleries

    Posted 11-04-2015 05:42 PM

Hello Forum! We are working with a museum whose exhibits cover some fairly complex technical topics. We are looking at interactive animations and electronic "games" to engage people in the topics more fully. Our question is: for those of you who have electronic interactives that have somewhat open-ended experiences or outcomes, what is the length of the visitor experience? We want to balance a rich and meaningful experience against the attention span of visitors for these interactive pieces. If it is really engaging, how long will they spend on it? We'd love your insight/experience on this topic. Thank you!

If you haven't yet, I recommend you look at the Cleveland Museum of Art. ArtLens and Gallery One are highly interactive.

    Hi Alissa,

I helped a small museum in Northern California develop 21 separate audio tours for patrons (with an average of 12 tour stops each).  We experimented with various segment lengths for a variety of different audiences (children, seniors, ESL speakers, etc.).  Our audience gave us feedback on every tour.  Sixty to 90 seconds per segment was the preferred length.  Games may differ, of course.   I hope this helps!
