Cortume, dress and fashion

    Hi everyone,

I would like to ask are there any people interested in fashion or dress history; fashion exhibitions; curating fashion exhibitions etc.? I know that there is no special department dedicated to these subject in AAM, but maybe some of us are involved in these issues?
    Please, let me know :)

Most people (museum staff, academics and designers) join Costume Society of America (Costume Society of America

We are an inter-disciplinary museum, but our next exhibition is actually Threads: The Story in our Clothes. It is my first time curating a clothing collection and I have much to worry about! If there are any resources people can recommend for the physical displaying of garments, I would love advice on where to look. Any tips and tricks are appreciated when it comes to dressing manikins with historic clothing.

    Thanks,

JoAnn Zeise -A Practical Guide to Costume Mounting from the Routledge Series in Conservation and Museology by Lara Flecker is a great resource. The instructions are really clear and it is very well illustrated!

Thanks Kelsey! I found the book at the university library and it is on the way. Perhaps we'll even add it to the library. Thanks!

    Hi Piotr,

I'm glad to see you posting on MuseumJunction about this topic. I know there are many people in the field (including me) who are interested in costumes, fashion, textiles, etc., many of whom have a theatre background. I look forward to seeing what people might add to the discussion.

It was great to meet you at the AAM Annual Meeting and to learn more about you over the three days of the Getty leadership series.

    Hi Piotr--

In addition to AAM, many costume/fashion/historic dress curators and scholars belong to the Costume Society of America, which has an international "region." Also, ICOM has a Committee for Museums and Collections of Costume.

    Best wishes--

    Hi Piotr,

Try the Costume Society: Costume Society of America

Also the Textile Society of America: Textile Society

Many professional members of both organizations. Good luck!

Piotr: The organizations that have been recommended are all good ways to connect with museums and scholars in apparel and dress.  A number of US museums either specialize in apparel and/or textiles or have significant collections in those areas. The Goldstein Museum of Design has a collection of 32,000 objects, over 2/3s or which are apparel and accessories and another 2-3,000 are textiles. We are part of the UMN's College of Design which has several major that study these collections as part of their curricula. Contact me if you are interested in exploring ideas.

    Piotr,

I had a wonderful experience working on a fashion audio tour with Melissa Leventon, a founding partner of Curatrix Group museum consultants and appraisers.  She is a specialist in European and American costume and textiles.  You can reach her on LinkedIn.  Here is a bit more about her:  California College of the Arts

    I hope this helps!

    Best wishes,

As noted The Costume Society of America and the ICOM Committee are good sources for discussion.  Many institutions have Curators focused on this subject matter.

The Clothing and Textiles Collection of the Museum at Texas Tech University holds over 26,000 objects of garments, accessories, household linens, quilts, coverlets and dolls.  We welcome any research inquiries and continue to build the collection so that it is a source for design and history research.  My work focuses on fashion history, fashion exhibitions, curating fashion exhibitions, but also exhibitions and research on the other aspects of the extensive collection.  I continue to work to build the collection with objects that extend it's research and exhibition capabilities and am happy to help or discuss issues if you want to contact me at marian.ann.montgomery@ttu.edu.

Hi Piotr (and thanks for the shout-out, Elizabeth),

Adding to the excellent advice everyone has already posted, there is a Costume Professionals group on LinkedIn that you can apply to join.  Members are a mix of theatre, collector, and museum people and it's a good forum for soliciting answers to practical questions.  It might be a good resource for you as you embark on your exhibition.

There is an ICOM Costume Committee meeting in Toronto in early September, and there will be a short committee meeting during the ICOM Triennial in Milan next July as well.  Here is a link to the Costume Committee webpage:

    http://network.icom.museum/costume/

And finally, although I don't know of any other museums in Poland with costume (though there's a great textile collection, tapestry especially, in Lodz), there are many museums in Europe that have costume collections that might be able to offer more local advice on things like mannequin sources and other matters. Here is a link with a list

    Piotr,

I grew up doing living history with my dad and then was a big theater kid, like some others who posted are as well, so I also have a love of costumes and regalia. As was mentioned earlier, Costume Society of America is a great resource. FIDM also tends to have some rotating displays of opera and theater costumes on occasion that are fantastic if you are ever in the LA area.

We have a textile curator and will open a major textile exhibit, Little Black Dress: From Mourning to Night, next year. In addition to the organizations already mentioned, if you are interested more in use of reproduction textiles in museum programming and interpretation, I'd suggest checking out AAM affiliate organizations, ALFHAM (The Association of Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums alfham.org) and IMTAL (International Museum Theatre Alliance imtal-us.org)

    All the Best,

    Elizabeth
