  • 1.  Wheelchairs for visitor use?

    Posted 12-09-2014 03:13 PM
I have a handful of questions about wheelchair usage:
    - How many wheelchairs does your institution have in-house? Are you a small, medium, or large museum?
    - Which department is responsible for maintenance?
    - Is that same department also responsible for purchasing new equipment?

Thanks in advance for your input!

We have 1 wheelchair and we are a small museum. Our museum assistant who greets guests would be the person in charge of determining if maintenance should be done on the wheelchair and to order a new one.

We have one wheelchair and it's a narrow one (maybe sports?).  The head of maintenance is supposed to check it once a month and arrange for any service needed.  Regarding actual maintenance, I think it's only been used 3 - 4 times so it hasn't needed any.

We have two wheelchairs on hand and we are a medium-sized museum. Not clear whose responsibility so that usually means the Education department, certainly for budget.

We are a small museum and have one wheelchair. It is extra wide and is typically requested a few times a month. It is the second wheelchair we've had in 20 years and both were donated by a local pharmacy. When the first one wore out, we contacted the pharmacy and in a matter of days we had a new one. We have one "fix it" person who handles maintenance.

We are a medium-sized museum, and on an average day we have seven wheelchairs and two strollers.  If we have a special event that we know will cater to a crowd that may use wheelchairs more often, we'll rent extras.  Also, we do not charge for their use, nor do the other museums in our immediate area.  Visitor Services is responsible for them, arranges any repairs with the Facilities department, and orders new wheelchairs when needed.

    I hope that's helpful!
