DEI Audit of Exhibitions and Collections

  • 1.  DEI Audit of Exhibitions and Collections

    Posted 04-15-2021 02:05 PM
    Hello!

We are in the process of developing a DEI audit of our exhibitions and collections. Does anyone have experience with this in their museums? Would you be willing to share methodologies? Or, is anyone planning a similar initiative and would like to chat about developing ethical methodologies with us?

    Thanks!

    Amalia,

This is a fascinating idea and I will be interested in learning more about your intention--what was the stimulus for this initiative, and what is your goal? The closest I've seen is the King County Office of Historic Preservation's analogous initiative, started this year (I think), to re-examine landmarked properties to ensure that the nomination paperwork captures all the diverse stories associated with a site. I can see ways in which that could be applied to objects in a collection and we do this all the time to try to re-interpret our collections in fresh and relevant ways. Tell us more, now or as you move the initiative forward!

    Good morning,

Our institution is currently preparing our first DEAI self-audit, and we're in the thick of analyzing our Collection and exhibitions. We based our exhibition section on the Speed Art Museum's 2020 Racial Equity Report (available on the Speed's website), and did a more thorough analysis of our Collection, whose artists and contexts we naturally know more about. Happy to discuss further if you'd like!

Although it's focused only on the representation of gender in museum images and videos, you might find it helpful to take a look at the IF/THEN Gender Representation Toolkit developed by ASTC as part of its involvement in the IF/THEN Coalition. I suspect many of the same lessons and approaches could apply for DEAI work more generally.

We are developing a pop-up exhibit with the IF/THEN content.  Will be ready to share with other institutions in early to mid June.

Thanks so much everyone for the recommendations and suggestions!

I am wondering if anyone would be interested in a Zoom / Teams / etc. call in July for a discussion and resource exchange once MoPOP and others get deeper into process development?

Have a great rest of your week,
    Amalia

I too would be very interested to learn from others. We are about to conduct an audit and will be inviting ALL staff to contribute their observations and insights. For this first phase, we don't want to focus on what's absent from our exhibitions and collections. That is a grand project and we know there is so much work to do.  For starters,  we want to review, through the eyes of staff that are on the floor and engaging with the content and the public about text, images and objects that need to be further contextualized, supplemented, removed. We have traditionally relied on our curatorial, tour guides, education staff to participate in these  kinds of projects, but recognize that so many of our colleagues pass these exhibits every day and have valuable insights. Planning to create this first pass through a google survey and will begin to discuss and tackle the recommendations.

    Hello!
I specialize in museum access and love this topic! (formally of the Monterey Bay Aquarium). I'd encourage museums to do DEAI instead of DEI because Access is not the same is inclusion.
Id also separate the audit out a bit so that the objectives are clear. Are you doing an audit on diversity of collection and exhibit or the accessibility, ect. Accessibility includes ADA compliance and considerations which I have resources for if you want!

    Hello,

I would like to participate to see what other museum are doing with DEI.  We are in the process of looking at this issues as well.  I like the idea of adding A - Access to this audit as well.

I would love to join in on this future conversation! We're been trying to start work on a DEI audit for collections and exhibitions here at the Metal Museum as well. I enjoyed reading the Speed Art Museum's 2020 Racial Equity Report that was suggested earlier in the thread and hope we can generate a similar report after our audit. We've had some bumps trying to organize an artist survey to gather the demographic data but are hoping to have the survey written and distributed by the end of the year.
