I could not agree more Anne. In my book's chapter on governance, the first sentence is: "The nonprofit sector in America is governed by amateurs." A quote at the head of that chapter is from Reynold Levy, former president and CEO of Lincoln Center. It is spot-on. "Unless trustees are deeply and properly engaged in the life of an organization they are likely to act inappropriately..." He notes this in his book about running Lincoln Center. The title is wonderful: They Told Me Not To Take This Job.
