  • 1.  Guide to the role of the Board vs. role of the Executive Director/CEO?

    Greetings:

    Some years ago I remember seeing a document that posed several situations and tasks, and asked (rather like a quiz) whether it was the role of the Board or the Executive Director/CEO, as part of helping Board Members to clarify their roles especially. Does anyone have something like this, or have you seen such a document? Thanks for any references on this.

    BoardSource has a variety of publications, and i believe there are several related to the Board and executive director relationship, roles, and responsibilities. Please let me know if you need any assistance or perhaps a facilitated discussion with the board to ensure that they have clarity on their roles. There are also opportunities for a board self-assessment, which is both evaluative and educational, that can be a precursor to this type of discussion. Cheers.

    what ever did happen to the publication?  AAM's Of Mutual Respect ... it was brief and concise.  More of a pamphlet, but had both board self-assessment recommendations and recommendations as to how the board should evaluate the performance of the ED ...

    I agree with Bruce Thibodeau that BoardSource has great info on this topic.   I would also direct anyone to the Museum Trustee Association website.  They have four templates for association members to help Trustees govern more and meddle less.  Their CEO also will answer questions.
