  • 1.  Artist Rights Society (ARS) unrealistic fees for web use

    I wondered if other museums had had the same experience: we wanted to honor an artist's passing by putting up the work by them in our collection on our social media, reached out to ARS and were told that for a "6 month term" we were to pay $70. Putting aside that it is almost impossible to eliminate something once it's in the ether, the fee in itself we found unrealistic. We are always eager to support artists in any way we can,  and artists rights is one of them,  but this is unreasonable, particularly as we all at this time are trying to migrate as many programs to webform as possible. Please share your thoughts.

    I think that fee sounds fairly modest to middling, actually, based on my own experience with web licensing...but, yes, the term seems awfully short!

    As part of licensing I work with ARS on a fairly regular basis. Anything on social media will be more expensive than anything on your website because it's seen as a promotional space, but if you post on your website and share that post on social media, usually that drops the cost of the fee. Creating a page on your website and sharing that instead also aids with the length of time - once you remove the image from the page on your website, then that addresses their 6 month time limit as well.
