  • 1.  Archival Assessment

    I am looking for the best way to figure out an estimated amount of archival supplies (how many sleeves/folders/boxes etc) needed to house our entire collection (most of which is not properly stored and varies in type). Is this best done by having an archivist come in, assess the collection/condition and create an estimate from there, or are there companies out there that do this?  What is a typical cost associated with this service?

    The Society of American Archivists website has a directory of archival consultants. That would probably be the easiest way to find an archivist who could come do an assessment for you. Directory of Archival Consultants | Society of American Archivists

    Thanks to all for your input.  I actually have a proposal from an archivist in hand but the Board balked at the cost and it seems is expecting it to be done for free.  I know this is not a simple task and would not expect a museum professional to do it for free. Our final goal is to take the estimate to a donor for full funding of the project, to include hiring an archivist to complete the project and purchasing all the supplies and storage necessary.
