Does anyone have any sort of guidelines for interpreters mentoring new interpreters?  I have things I'd like them to do, but wonder if anyone has anything more formal.

    Thank you in advance!!

We do not have this documented but several of our veteran interpreters (all are volunteers!) present at least one of the 20 lectures required of trainees.

They also act as mentors in a buddy/ intern approach during actual tours.  This is particularly useful for larger groups.  Occasionally, when the group is particularly large, or naturally "flexible" in its timing, we will station interpreters in each gallery and the group moves on to the next.  In these cases, we will station a newbie with a veteran.

Finally, when "graduating" trainees present their peer-reviewed tour, there is always at least one veteran in the "test" group.

We typically have staff shadowing/mentoring interpreters, but we have developed tools that would be just as usable by other interpreters. We have a form to guide observing a program that calls out what we value in a quality program, what our core standards/ learning objectives are, (for specific programs), and preferred interpretive techniques. Each section has a scale as well as provided examples of what we're looking for/ space for the observer to provide examples to support their rating.

With a clearly articulated rubric we can ensure that we are providing relevant feedback in an objective way. This reduces bias and allows for people with different interpretive styles to succeed--as long as they are achieving the objectives there is room for diverse approaches!

Of course these documents evolve as we get feedback from the docents (how helpful is this feedback?), but this is our current iteration. We removed the numbered scale to reduce pressure on volunteers, who didn't like feeling like they were being "graded", and made sure to emphasize providing examples and evidence for any feedback. Our docents teach field trip programs with specific learning objectives, which is a little different than giving general tours. Teachers come expecting specific activities and artifacts to be done, and topics to be covered.
