  • 1.  Museum Insurance mini survey

    Posted 01-14-2020 01:35 PM

I am interested in collecting some data on fine arts insurance.  Some sample questions: limits as a percentage of total value, deductibles, exclusions, transit coverage types, etc .  I would be happy to collect data confidentially and then circulate to those who wish to collaborate.  Or if a resource already exists with current data, I would greatly appreciate recommendations.  Please email me at rtaylorkidd@folger.edu.   Many thanks.

Dear Ruth - I would be very interested in your findings.  We have been advised differently from different perspectives.  Our insurance carrier would love to know the aggregate value of our collection, but logic and accountants caution against a collections-wide appraisal (which would also be immensely expensive).

Since we are a department of an educational institution - much like many colleges and universities, but one of only two in the U.S. that are of high schools - there is always the risk of attempts to monetize.  We've never had a problem from our carrier when insuring loaned objects (door-to-door), so I'm grateful for that.

On the other hand, our deductible is very high - $10,000.

My very best to you in this quest!  Vivian
