  • 1.  Nonprofit - government hybrid organization

    Posted 07-14-2017 05:35 PM
Good afternoon! The Clinton House Museum is a private, nonprofit organization. However, we have an MOU with our city's convention and visitors bureau to operate us. In other words, they provide most of the operations funding and employ the staff here. But we can raise money for programs, exhibits, etc. in the traditional ways that nonprofits do.

We are challenged in a couple of ways regarding this arrangement, and we are looking for other organizations that may have some sort of hybrid operation that we can learn from. If so, would you identify yourselves and let's talk!

    Thank you!

At the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum we have a similar situation. We are a State of Iowa Museum, employees are State of Iowa employees. In addition, we have federal dollars that pay for part of employees salaries and operation.  We also have a non-profit arm that (501(c) 3) that raises money.

Most of the problems we have is an the non-profit sometimes wants to be involved in operations and staffing.  Let's talk.

    Good Morning Ms. Albright,

Here at the New York Transit Museum we have a similar situation where we are located in a decommissioned subway station that is part of NYC Transit and we have a 501 c3 arm to the Transit Museum whose main mission it to raise funds for our educational programs.  You can call me or the Director of the Transit Museum, Concetta Bencivenga at 718-694-5102.

Greetings, Our Museum operates in a hydrid fashion, not quite like yours but with dual operational input and funding sources. I worked out the best path for our organization and understand the nuances. I would be happy to speak with you about it. It works well here for us and we achieved AAM accreditation within this model.

The Kaminksi House Museum is a public/private partnership with the City of Georgetown (SC). The city owns the collection, the buildings, and the grounds and a 501 (c) (3) friends org runs the museum on a daily basis. The staff are paid by the friends org. The museum is funded in part by an allocation from the city (from the hospitality & accommodations tax) and the rest of the budget comes from earned income and fundraising. All preservation initiatives are funded by the non-profit.
