  • 1.  Museum Interpreter seeking interpreter training...

I am writing a proposal to teach the history of Gangsters of Boston...based on the book by George Hassett...at the Inner Sanctum in Boston's Dudley neighborhood. Since I have never taught a history class or created an interpretive curriculum based on a book, I am hoping for advice as to where I can find interpretive training. Can you help?

There are many, many resources for interpreter training.  Perhaps the first place for you to start will be the National Association for Interpretation -- peruse their website to see if you can get anything out of that.  Otherwise, there are oodles of books on the subject (look at the AAM Bookstore), and always someone has workshops around the country.  Look up the New England Museum Association - their conference is running this week in Maine, but they'll undoubtedly have mini-workshops throughout the region.  Good luck!

NAI is great! that is where we send our planners. However, John Veverka also offers on-line courses: Training for Interp. Trainers

and NPS also offers training - http://www.nps.gov/idp/interp/theprogram.htm

Check out Judy Fort Brenneman with Greenfire Creative. She and I both sit on the board for the International Museum Theatre Alliance (IMTAL), and her specialty is interpretation. Here's her website: http://www.greenfire-creative.com/index.htm

You are located in the NAI's Northeast Region (http://www.interpnet.com/nai/nai/_About/Region_1.aspx). They have an annual conference, but perhaps more importantly, there are many people who can provide information about training opportunities. The NAI's Certified Interpretive Planner class may be helpful, because it focuses on larger scale planning, not for single programs (that's for the CIG mentioned below).

Indiana State Parks has a nationally respected interpretive training program lasting 4 days in mid-May. Although geared for seasonal interpreters at our state parks, we get participants from all over because we have the Certified Interpretive Guide class as well as a thorough training in all aspects of working with visitors in a park or historic property setting. Perhaps there are similar training programs offered in Massachusetts or another New England park system.
