Subject: request for audience survey questions
Hello!
My colleagues and I are in the process of getting some online surveys together to start getting feedback and information from our public, members, et al. Would anyone have any of their own survey samples they would be willing to share? We're thinking of using SurveyMonkey, and will be rolling out specific surveys targeting audience experience at our site, as well as content they would be interested in seeing in the future. Any tips for asking questions would be appreciated as well. How many questions are best? Should we ask open-ended questions or multiple choice, or ask for a number rating? Please share here or off list at curator@everhart-museum.org. Thanks for your time!

Dear Nezka: A couple of ideas. One is to use two surveys: a short one and a long one, for those people who want to answer longer.
Two--in terms of questions, it's always better to start off with questions the person can feel s/he can answer successfully, outside of the demographics, which you try to get, and vary, depending on the type of exhibit. Then move gradually to more open-ended questions.
Three--ask people what they would like for interaction and as a take away. For the first, is there something more that can enhance their experience while they're in the museum? For the second, would they like a paper flier, an e-mail sent to them with resources, would they like to join the museum's social media page, etc.? You can also do a follow-up with them and see whether the exhibit has changed anything in their lives, behaviors, etc.
