  • 1.  request for audience survey questions

    Posted 04-28-2015 10:37 AM

    Hello!

My colleagues and I are in the process of getting some online surveys together to start getting feedback and information from our public, members, et al. Would anyone have any of their own survey samples they would be willing to share? We're thinking of using SurveyMonkey, and will be rolling out specific surveys targeting audience experience at our site, as well as content they would be interested in seeing in the future. Any tips for asking questions would be appreciated as well. How many questions are best? Should we ask open-ended questions or multiple choice, or ask for a number rating? Please share here or off list at curator@everhart-museum.org. Thanks for your time!

    Hi Nezka,

I would highly recommend looking at some of the examples of surveys in surveymonkey itself.  One of the challenges I have seen is someone trying to take questions designed for a paper survey or other administration method and transferring it to surveymonkey.  Explore the platform.  If you are not used to coding data, I would discourage using open-ended questions.  Depending on the audience and given the online administration,open-ended questions may be skipped over anyway.

There are various efforts underway to develop standard questions and definitions. The most relevant to your interests may be COVES, a science museum collaboration to develop shared database of visitor experience questions and data. This is run by the Museum of Science, Boston, and you might ask Ryan Auster, who is the project PI  The larger conversation about standardizing surveys about informal science learning is facilitated by one of CAISE's (informal science.org) working groups.

A strong suggestion: Include the Net Promoter Score question in whatever survey you do (something like -- "On a scale of one to ten, how likely are you to recommend XX to your friends and family?" -- but look it up, and it has a scoring formula). Many museums and businesses use this well-documented and studied consumer number. Museums often score in the 90's.
