Exhibit design for new Coffee Museum

  • 1.  Exhibit design for new Coffee Museum

    Posted 04-24-2017 01:19 PM
    Hi everyone,
I joined AAM a while back hoping to tap into the best minds for a Panama Coffee Museum venture and I am so glad I did! So far it´s been full of great disussions and relevant information and my team and I are now ready to get some names of exhibit designers or specialized firms to help design and maybe even produce part or all of the experience. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I want to get a head start before the May AAM conference and maybe set up meetings and get some business done there.
    thanks so much!

    Hi Mercedes,
Looks like you will be busy at AAM. I am an exhibit designer and owner of McMillan Group in Westport, CT. Besides our interest in talking to you about the design of the Coffee Museum, I would be glad to talk to you first about what we think you need to look for and ask when making a decision on an exhibit designer. Please call me if you want to talk. Thanks.

We partner with our clients to uncover their unique story and then use that story to build an engaging experience that inspires people to act. I encourage you to visit our site The Brand Experience to learn more about our process and some of the work that we have done.

Let me know if you would like to schedule some time to talk prior to or while at the conference.

    Hi Mercedes,
If you need help/input on creating your gift shop fully themed to your new Coffee Museum we have several retail principals that can help you with that too including unique product development, business plan and all. If by chance you will have a separate café or maybe incorporate some simple food / beverage within your gift shop can help with that too. You can learn more about our consulting services at www.manask.com and feel free to contact me at 818 557-0636 if any questions. We will also be exhibiting at AAM May 8-10. Sounds like a wonderful museum project. Art Manask

    Hi Mercedes,

How much do I love that I read your post as I was drinking coffee? A lot! I've worked with several exhibit designers over the past 25 years, mostly setting up new museums. I specialize in artifact installation but by no means am I limited to that. I would love to meet you at AAM but I have a commitment that will keep me from attending this year.

I am based out of San Antonio, TX and travel is not a problem. Yo hablo un poco Español tambien. Pero se necesita un poco de trabajo. I would be happy to share any of my information with you.

We have loved working with both Quatrefoil Associates and Studio Tectonic on exhibits for our past museum and the one we are soon to open. Ultra pros and great people.

I can't wait to come to your museum! My husband is in the coffee industry, so we'll be there with the proverbial bells on.

Hi Mercedes: I want to recommend a new book that may help you think through the interpretive design process. Richard Rabinowitz of American History Workshop has been in the interpretive design business for many years. His book, out just a few months ago, is Curating America: Journeys Through Storyscapes of the American past. Don't hesitate to be in touch if you have any questions.

    cheers!

    Mercedes,

I would suggest that you look at the AAM Marketplace and select or search Exhibit Design Exhibit Design - Museum Marketplace. The Marketplace is essentially a database. Beware that the companies listed first paid for that privilege, so take some time to explore beyond the first few pages. The database also does not weed out companies whose primary expertise is not exhibit design. You will find many different exhibition design firms with links to their websites. I would suggest looking at their online portfolios, and then contacting firms that you are interested in and asking for more information. Then, you have a decision to make, create an RFP (Request for Proposals) or interview a few firms that you like. You can find examples of RFPs online, or ask on this forum if any institution would be willing to share one with you. It will take work to create an RFP, but it will allow you to gain a better understanding of each firm. Whichever route you choose, the ultimate goal is to find a firm whose work you admire, and with whom you can have a good working relationship. That will require at least one face-to-face meeting. Whatever you do, check at least three references, including a recent one for each firm.

    Good luck,

    Mike
